Austria Votes Today

An anti-immigration and Eurosceptic (literally means criticism of the European Union (EU). Some observers though prefer to understand opposition to and total rejection of the EU (anti-EU-ism) as ‘Euroscepticism’) candidate is hoping to become the first far-right European head of state since (Oy Vey) Adolf Hitler in a re-run of the Austrian presidential election.

Norbert Hofer, a member of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPOe), is competing against the independent economist Alexander Van der Bellen – who is backed by the Green (water mellon party – green on the outside red on the inside) party.

In May, he lost the presidential election by just 31,000 votes to Mr Van der Bellen – but after FPOe cried foul, voting irregularites were uncovered and a re-run was organised for Sunday 4th December.

  1. Norbert Hofer, the leader of Austria’s far Right Freedom party, has conceded defeat in the country’s presidential elections.

Mr Hofer, who would have been the first far-right leader in the European Union, accepted defeat after exit polls showedMr Van der Bellen, the Green party backed candidate, with 53.6 percent of the vote.

The projection put Mr Hofer on 46.4 percent. Electoral officials said votes left to count would not affect the result, although the margins may change slightly.
The result ends a bitterly fought presidential election that threatened to deal a further blow to the liberal European consensus that has prevailed since the end of the Second World War.
